Peak community body aiming at Court House

The Peel Community Development Group (PCDG) is a step closer to realising its aspirations in having a base in the centre of the Peel region.  The recognised regional peak body of community service providers is currently working towards being the anchor tenant at the Old Pinjarra Court House.

PCDG Coordinator Madeleine Powell said that having a physical presence in a regional centre would allow PCDG to work more closely with the Shires to build community relationships and increase service provision to the region.

“An opportunity for a presence in Pinjarra was presented in 2007 when the National Trust floated an idea that the heritage listed Old Pinjarra Court House was available for community activities”, said Ms Powell.  “With support from Alcoa we have a vision to transform the facility into a Community Resource Centre for the people of the Murray district.

Pinjarra Refinery Manager Armando Torres recently joined with representatives from Shire of Murray and Peel Development Commission to present Chairperson Paddi Creevey and Madeleine Powell with a cheque for $30,000 as the first installment of a three year partnership between Alcoa and Peel Community Development Group.

“Alcoa has a very good appreciation of the need for an organization such as PCDG to support and develop other smaller non profit community based service providers,” said Mr Torres.  “I am pleased we are in a position to help at the grass roots level of this project and am looking forward to seeing the Pinjarra Court House become the hub for many services that will benefit our community.”

PCDG is an incorporated body with a regional focus that had its inception from a response to a study of the social condition of the Peel region “Peel Away the Mask” (2001) where it was shown that the community held serious concerns about the overall well being of the region.

This project has previously been and still is supported with assistance through the Peel Development Commission and Alinta via the Western Australia Community Foundation.
