Over 500 competitors including 60 Alcoans will be ditching their work attire this Saturday while they row their hearts out in the 11th Alcoa Australian Corporate Head of the River regatta, to raise more than $100,000 for United Way.

Sixty one corporate crews from Geelong, Melbourne, Ballarat and Colac have endured four weeks of early morning and late night training sessions in preparation for Australia’s largest corporate rowing regatta. The regatta will be held on Saturday October 11 on the Barwon River rowing mile from 10am. There will be loads of family entertainment on and off the water including a jumping castle, clowns and face painting, delicious food and drink vendors and live music. Don’t miss Bay FM’s live broadcast when Geelong business leaders will be ‘held ransom’ in a scissor lift. In return for their freedom, they’ll need to muster a $5000 donation each for United Way Geelong from their fellow business partners! Drew Ginn, triple Olympic gold medal winning rower and current World Champion, is patron of the event despite having undergone recent surgery to repair a problem in his lower back. Drew will be in Geelong for the day, cheering on the rowers and providing them crucial race day tips. Event Chairman, Andrew Cleary welcomes all from the Geelong region down to the Barwon River this Saturday to enjoy all of the fun and festivities for the 11th Alcoa Australian Corporate Head of the River. “The Alcoa Corporate Head of the River has grown to be a major event on the Geelong sporting calendar over the last 11 years. There seems to be no end to its popularity’’ Andrew said. Alcoa Point Henry is entering a record eight crews this year, swapping their hard hats for Lycra. Smelter Manager Stewart Esdale is looking forward to the company’s continued strong involvement in the regatta and said the event is part of an enduring relationship between Alcoa and United Way Geelong. “We are proud to continue a partnership of over 40 consecutive years with United Way through this event,” Stewart said. “The Alcoa Australian Corporate Head of the River is a great way for businesses to get involved in the community, get healthy and fit and raise more than $100,000 for those in need in the Geelong community at the same time.” All profits will be distributed by United Way Geelong to over 70 health and human services in the Geelong region. United Way Geelong hopes to raise a record $125,000 from this year’s event.
