Anglesea joins Alcoa’s Global Team for Community Action

During October, Alcoa’s Anglesea and Point Henry workforce will join an estimated 47,000 people in 36 countries as part of the Alcoa Foundation’s Worldwide Month of Service, which celebrates community service and volunteerism with an environmental focus.

Hundreds of local Alcoa employees will dedicate time to making a positive difference to the Surf Coast and Geelong communities throughout the month.

One of the first activities on the Anglesea program of events will see employees and members from the Friends of the Eastern Otways and Conservation Volunteers Australia continue the removal of environmental weeds from the Great Otway National Park adjacent to O’Donohue Rd and the Great Ocean Road.

Acting Power Station Manager Chris Rolland said that Month of Service is a great time for our communities and a lot of fun for Alcoa employees.

“Our people are volunteering all year round, but this is a chance for extra effort, and for us to celebrate their great achievements, whether they’re wielding a shovel, helping to protect the plant communities or riding a bike to work to help the environment.

“Volunteering also plays an important role in strengthening our communities, which is why Alcoa and the Alcoa Foundation actively support volunteering and community groups such as ANGAIR.  Our team here is very much looking forward to helping out at one of the activities on offer and lending a hand.”

The Alcoa Month of Service was first launched in 2006 and now sees more than 1,200 employees across Australia participate.

Alcoa’s position as a leader in the climate change challenge is reflected in this year’s Carbon Crunch theme, where employees are encouraged to become part of the solution to climate change by improving their greenhouse footprint via two innovative programs created in partnership with Greening Australia - Make an Impact and Breathe Easy*.  A series of Carbon Crunch workshops at Anglesea will assist employees, and their friends and families to reduce their personal environmental impact.

Alcoa’s Worldwide Month of Service is an initiative of the Alcoa Foundation. The Alcoa Foundation proactively supports and encourages employee volunteering through two programs which match employee time with community grants, ACTION and Bravo!
