Sixteen student leaders from Lansvale, Canley Heights and Carramar public schools came together to learn how to Think Safe, Play Safe at school.

Since joining the Alcoa Foundation supported Safety Club program one year ago, students have developed and implemented a range of behavioural and environmental safety improvements at school using safety audits to identify short, medium and long term solutions. A KIDS Foundation safety education program, the Safety Club field day was hosted by Lansvale Primary School on Wednesday 7 May 2008. KIDS Foundation Head of Injury Prevention, Ms Amy Gillett, said the day aimed to teach grade five and six students how to identify hazards in their school environments and build upon the Think Safe, Play Safe message through a range of activities. “Every day 5,000 children are injured in accidents that could be prevented” Ms Gillett said. “The Field Day introduces new students to the KIDS Foundation’s school-based Safety Club program which guides communities on issues of child safety and injury prevention, and boosts the learning of existing students.” Alcoa Australia Rolled Products Location Manager John Costley said Alcoa was pleased to be able to assist KIDS Foundation in teaching children how to prevent accidents not only in schools but also in their homes. “The Safety Club education program reflects Alcoa’s own strong safety culture in preventing accidents and achieving zero injuries in the workplace, and in developing everyone as a safety leader,” Mr Costley said.
