Solutions Through Partnerships

For more than two decades Alcoa and Greening Australia have worked together to improve and restore the Australian environment.  Through this partnership, over 10 million trees have been planted and thousands of hectares of degraded land rehabilitated.

In 2007, in a first for Australian industry, Alcoa and Greening Australia  have developed a greenhouse footprint reduction program for the families of Alcoa employees and their immediate communities.

Known as Make an Impact, the program includes access to a greenhouse calculator and a kit featuring a range of tips on how to lower energy and water consumption and more effectively manage waste.

Australian households generate almost one-fifth of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions through everyday activities. This bold initiative, teamed with employee commitment, will empower local households to address climate change – and find local solutions to this very important global issue.

In addition the Make an Impact program, Alcoa and Greening Australia are partners in the River Recovery program, which is breathing life back into Australia's rivers and streams in urgent need of repair.

Smelter in the Park

Portland Aluminium sits on over 600 hectares of land. Smelting operations, buildings and roads occupy around 100 hectares. The remaining land has been turned into parklands for the local community, areas of research and learning, and habitats for wildlife. Portland Aluminium's Smelter in the Park is recognised worldwide as a benchmark in industrial and environmental harmony.

Alcoa and the Department of Agriculture are currently investigating the use of Alkaloam (fine grained residue) as a soil amendment to reduce the impact of nutrient runoff to the Peel-Harvey Estuary. Results from monitoring continue to show improved pasture productivity and reduced nutrient runoff.
