Alcoa in Australia

Applying for Alcoa Sponsorship, Frequently Asked Questions

For many years Alcoa has been a sponsor of a broad range of community projects, events and initiatives.

This page is designed to answer some of the questions that are frequently asked by sponsorship applicants.

What levels of sponsorship does Alcoa consider?
Alcoa sponsorships are considered at three levels:
• Corporate – for National sponsorships
• State – for State or Regional sponsorships
• Local – for sponsorships of community groups, projects and events in areas close to Alcoa’s operating locations.

What makes a successful Alcoa sponsorship?
Successful sponsorships are many and varied.  For example:

  • Due to Alcoa’s strong environmental commitments, the company is one of Australia’s major sponsors of environmental, conservation and Landcare projects.
  • Alcoa has partnered with the Fremantle Arts Centre to develop the Alcoa In the Community project throughout the Peel region in Western Australia.  This project encompasses 12 regional locations and encourages community participation in local arts projects.  This partnership has been ongoing since 1997.
  • Alcoa Frog Watch is a national program where Alcoa works with the WA Museum in Western Australia, combining research with community environmental awareness.  Over 7000 members of Frog Watch collect information which is proving invaluable in the race to monitor Western Australian frog populations.
  • Alcoa supports sport in Western Australia through its new partnership with Swimming WA for the Alcoa Country Championships.  This prestigious event joins together athletes from throughout non-metropolitan WA with an opportunity to compete under conditions experienced by national and international competitors.
  • Alcoa sponsors medical research; community events; technological innovations; education programs and many other ventures.
  • Alcoa is a major contributor to charities and community projects through corporate support of United Way and the company’s internal community chest P.E.A.C.H. (Personnel Employed by Alcoa Charity Help).

Does Alcoa welcome new sponsorship proposals?
Alcoa welcomes innovative proposals that fit comfortably within the company’s sponsorship portfolio.

Obviously not all sponsorship proposals will be successful.  Every year Alcoa receives many hundreds of applications for requests totalling millions of dollars and is obviously financially unable to support all the sponsorship applications it receives.

What will Alcoa support?
At both a corporate and local level, Alcoa sponsorships fall into the following categories:

  • Arts for Everyone
  • Future Leaders of Industry
  • Safe and Healthy Children and Families
  • Conservation and Sustainability
  • Stronger Communities

Underpinning each of these areas is our belief that volunteering is a critical element of stronger communities.

Is there anything Alcoa will not support?
Alcoa’s Sponsorship Policy adheres to specific guideines and does not allow:

    • Sponsorship of an individual
    • Travel expenses
    • Political or sectarian events
    • Commercial activity
    • Prize money for professional sport
    • Activities that could be construed as gambling

How much can you apply for?
Each Application is considered in its own right.  Alcoa may undertake a one-off event, such as a conference but the company usually appreciates the opportunity to develop a longer affiliation with a sponsored project.

    Why apply for sponsorship?
For any organisation, sponsorship is an important component of business.  Alcoa’s sponsorships are an investment in recognition opportunities that will advance the long-term interests of the company, as well as the long-term interests of the community.

When are Alcoa’s budgets allocated for sponsorships?
When is the best time to apply?
All Alcoa’s budgets are allocated on a calendar year basis, therefore major sponsorships are determined in August/September of the year prior to the sponsorship requirement.

Minor sponsorship requests are determined on an ad hoc basis as and when applications are received.

Successful sponsorship partnerships take commitment, communication and careful planning.

What level of commitment does Alcoa show to sponsored partnerships?
Alcoa believes that sponsorships are a partnership and communication is a vital link in any sponsorship partnership which Alcoa undertakes.

Our sponsorship commitment is not limited to simply handing over a cheque.  Alcoa adopts a genuine commitment to the sponsored project.  We work with you to ensure mutually beneficial outcomes.  Many significant community projects have developed as a result of a successful sponsorship partnership.

Beneficiaries of Alcoa’s sponsorship program commit to appropriate elements of recognition in return for sponsorship support and are encouraged to look for continuous improvement opportunities within a sponsorship feedback process.
