Sustainable Communities
Alcoa is focused on developing partnerships that lead to stronger, more inclusive communities in which to live and work. Alcoa's partnership with Our Community to empower community organisations by building their governance and organisational skills. Through this partnership, Alcoa has sponsored community representatives from Victoria, NSW and WA to attend the annual Communities in Control conference and a TAFE-level governance training program. As a founding partner of the Alcoa Research Centre for Stronger Communities at Curtin University of Technology in WA, Alcoa is supporting research on issues affecting Australian communities. Also in WA, Alcoa has established the Wagerup Sustainability Fund to share the benefits of Alcoa’s success and future growth by supporting community development initiatives. Alcoa will contribute at least $400,000 a year to the fund, with contributions increasing in line with the Wagerup refinery’s production levels. The Wagerup Sustainability Fund is an important development in Alcoa’s approach to community partnerships because it will share decision-making with the community on how Alcoa’s community contributions should be used. Funding decisions will be made by local committees with representation from the local councils and communities as well as Alcoa. The Wagerup Sustainability Fund is part of a range of initiatives that will be worth more than $20 million to the local community over 20 years.
